The Power of Intentionality
A Simple Leadership Practice
How intentional are you in relationships, specifically with greetings and departures – also called take offs and landings?
Do people feel seen by you as you come and go in your kitchen or your office?
Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, talks about the power of sincere greetings and farewells in her family, and the difference it made to each person’s well-being over time.
Consider simple statements like,
“Good morning.”
“Welcome home.”
“Good to see you.”
“See you tomorrow.”
“Welcome back.”
“Have a good evening.”
“Thank you for coming in to ask me.”
“Hi.”
“Goodbye”
These statements each have the power to build connection, rapport, and trust, and communicate the other person’s worth and value, all important building blocks of leading well.
So ask yourself, do people feel seen, and thus valued by you? Or do you skip this opportunity with the ones you actually interact with the most?
Now ask for some feedback from those you hope would answer “Yes!”
